Former Lagardère Sports digital media executive Wessel joins Hamburg agency
By Martin Ross
Philipp Wessel, a digital media executive who spent 10 years at the Lagardère Sports agency, has been named joint managing director of Sport.Media.Net, a media rights consultancy based in Hamburg.
The 44-year-old Wessel will work alongside Rainer Holz, the agency’s founder and former head of content at Deutsche Telekom, the German telecoms group.
Wessel (pictured, below) set up his own sports marketing consultancy in 2012, working with Deutsche Telekom on its live coverage of Germany’s top-tier basketball and ice hockey leagues.
Between 2011 and 2012, he spent a year as director, digital media at Triumph Media Group, the short-lived Hamburg-based sports marketing agency set up by Thomas Martens.
He joined Triumph from Sportfive (now Lagardère Sports), where he was senior director of new media from 2005 to 2011 (and head of marketing and sales for new media from 2002 to 2005).
He started his career at UFA Sports, one of three agencies that merged to form Sportfive.
Holz founded Sport.Media.Net in 2013 and the agency focuses on media rights consulting (acquisition, tenders and exploitation), digital media project management and sales support for digital products.
Clients listed by Sport.Media.Net include Amazon, Axel Springer, Deltatre and Deutsche Telekom.
