The Global Sports Impact Project is being developed through a series of consultations with a number of leading event experts from around the world who are providing guidance and support in the development of the GSI Event Rating System.
Phase One – November 2011 to December 2014
In the first phase of the GSI Project over 200 industry experts answered an online questionnaire that asked them to identify the key indicators in measuring the impact of an event and to weight their relative importance identified the indicators.
Based on their responses a small group of indicators were identified that could be used to measure the impact of an event and data was gathered on over 700 past and future events over a 12-year period.
Over 200 experts from all over the world have been engaged in the project so far including:
- Federations and Governing Bodies
- Government Agencies
- Olympic Committees
- Organising Committees
Phase Two – January 2015 to December 2015
In 2015 the GSI Project will look at a wider range of indicators and new ways of capturing this information and storing this data. It will develop a more advanced GSI Events Ratings System that will enable an event to be compared across a wider range of indicators.
The development plans for the GSI Project in this next phase of work include:
- Providing additional rigour to the methodology for the GSI Event Rating System;
- Extending the criteria and the number of indicators;
- Developing variants of the ratings system to suit all genres of events, for example, music and other arts events or business conferences and conventions;
- Deepening the GSI Event Ratings System to provide the basis of a bespoke service for Partners of the GSI Project providing bespoke ratings based on local objectives and priorities.
GSI will work with Experts and Academic Partners to develop this more advanced ratings system, introducing further sophistication and rigour. In advance of this, we are now seeking to confirm and extend the membership of the Expert Programme.
The GSI Experts Programme comprises of a global panel of experts and sector specialists acting as a sounding board for the development of GSI and participating in a series of surveys that will identify the important elements of impact of major sporting events and how they should be measured.
The surveys will be designed to minimise the demands on our Experts time and we will share exclusive content on the results with those Experts participating in each survey.
