Poland to proceed with bid for combined European Championships in 2022

Poland is pressing ahead with plans to host the second edition of the European Championships, the combined continental championships of seven Olympic sports, in 2022.
The presidents of the seven relevant national sports federations - for athletics, aquatics, golf, triathlon, gymnastics, rowing and cycling - met at the headquarters of the Polish ministry of sport and tourism this week to formulate a proposal.
The requested hosting fee is believed to be around €14 million ($15.7 million), and while that caused raised eyebrows among some of the national bodies, it is not expected to impact on Poland's bid.
The PZLA, the Polish athletics federation, had originally wanted to host the European Athletics Championships in 2022, but the board of the European Championships has already expressed a preference for all events to be staged in one city or region in 2022.
The inaugural edition in 2018 will largely take place in Glasgow, Scotland, with only athletics being staged in Berlin, Germany.
A Polish bid for the 2022 European Championships would focus on Katowice, with the 55,000-seater Silesian Stadium putting on athletics. The city of Pruszków would stage track cycling, while rowing and triathlon would be in Poznan.
Sites for gymnastics, golf and aquatics still need to be determined, according to Ryszard Stadniuksh, president of the Polish Rowing Association, who is playing a leading role in the bid.
The European Championships board held preliminary discussions with 12 interested cities and/or regions last year, but not all have continued in the process.
The board is refusing to divulge the identity of the bidders at this stage, albeit Sportcal can reveal that Sweden has joined Poland as a confirmed bidder.
They are two of the countries now working though a bidding application manual.
London, which was heavily linked with a bid earlier this year, is not among the interested parties for 2022.
In a statement to Sportcal, the European Championships board said it expects to announce the host of the 2022 championships "by spring 2018."
It added: “A collective and formal host selection process is taking place with a selected number of candidates, with whom we are in close contact. Of course, there are a lot of complexities involved in aligning everybody in a host selection process involving seven independent Federations.
“The objective of the Federations is to run a professional, fair and transparent process and to give the interested parties the optimal amount of time to prepare their best possible project and candidature.
“The official candidates for the 2022 European Championships will be announced soon with the consent of those candidates as we must respect that they are going through their own internal processes in their respective countries.”
