MotoGP gears up for launch of eSports competition
Motorcycling’s MotoGP has announced that it is to run its first eSports competition.
Dorna Sports, the series promoter, yesterday launched the MotoGP eSports Championship, which is to run alongside the rest of the MotoGP season.
The tournament will be based on the MotoGP 17 video game, produced by video game developer Milestone and exclusive to Sony’s PlayStation console.
Seven online events will take place, culminating in one live competition at the season-ending MotoGP grand prix in Valencia.
Dorna Sports said the competition will act as a trial for wider eSports plans next season.
Pau Serracanta, Dorna Sports' commercial area managing director, commented: "We will be putting together an exciting package mixing virtual and real life encounters blending the two worlds to deliver the utmost authenticity. From top tier partners to Media broadcasters and MotoGP™ teams, the stakeholders will be working in unison to have a successful start in eSports, on a scale befitting MotoGP's highest standard.”
MotoGP becomes the latest motorsport series to venture into eSports.
Motor racing’s World Rally Championship is in the second season of its eSports competition, while Formula E, the electronic motor racing series, has been running its eRace event since last year.
